From the Editor’s Desk…
INTERNATIONAL
Do you ever envision what the relatively near future (say, the next 5-10
years) might hold in terms of pro audio technology development?
I regularly ask this question of many colleagues around the industry who develop and
market pro audio technology for a living and I
rarely get definitive answers. Are we coming to
the point where reality - in other words, absolute
things like the laws of physics - might unduly tax
the ability to make advances as rapidly as they’ve
been coming?
Other factors such as cost and complexity also
come into play. So does practicality. About 10-12
years ago, I recall being told by more than one
very smart person working at the upper echelons of concert touring that
within a decade, every audience member at concerts would hear the mix
via their own personal headphones. (Hmm…)
Note that I’m not offering up this discussion under the delusion that
everything great and true and wonderful in audio has been invented
in the past 20 years. Of course, most everything we enjoy now is based
upon concepts, principles, and absolutely hard and pioneering work
done long ago.
Still, no one can seriously argue that it hasn’t been a wild and wonderful ride of late, and further, I predict with some certainty that one of the
“next big things” will be the continued rapid development and refinement
of system interconnect and networking technologies.
Anyway, our cover story, which focuses on the great things being done
with digital consoles in the touring world, brought this topic to mind. So
does the tribute by John Murray in this issue to the late Albert Leccese,
who helped so much in furthering innovation and development in his
too-brief time with us.
And, I’m curious what you think our future holds. As always, let me
know via the e-mail address below.
